Our Definition or Terminology of The Following:

1. TIMING: The way the dance steps fit into the music is called the "step timing" or just "timing" for short.  So, stay consistent to the timing you choose to define your dance during your performance / competition.

2. TECHNIQUE: Your balance, styling, spinning, turning all falls into this category. The proper technique will show poise, grace, sharpness, etc. during your performance / competition.

3. DIFFICULTY: To seperate yourself from the pack, the diffculty in your skills can help. Complicated combinations, aerials, tricks, dips, etc. will help you stand out and you will know it by the audience reaction and also, from the judges scorecard.

4. CONNECTION / PARTNERING: Salsa dancing is 75% partnering so, to please the judges you must have good skills when it comes to partnering. One of the main thing the judges are going to look for is great connection among the couples.

5. MUSICAL INTERPRETATION: In every dance is very important you display physical expression to the music. Musical Interpretation can either be rehearsed (PLEASE CHECK BELOW UNDER "CHOREOGRAPHY") or improvised. The judges will look how you interpret the music that was selected or that you chose to perform.

6. CHOREOGRAPHY:  It's an art of planning and arranging dance movements which makes up your rehearse musical interpretation be effective the dance floor. You will be judged in this category during the 2nd Round. This will make up 50% of your score, if you past to the next and final round.

7. SHOWMANSHIP: The ability to present your dance or routine in an attractive manner. You must have a sense of and the ability to present yourself effectively to the audience. What I like to call "stage charisma".

8. APPEARENCE: Dancers are encouraged to look professional and wear costumes or matching outfits. We strongly suggest that jeans are not used as costumes and that ladies wearing dresses or skirts wear nylons or fishnets.

General Rules:

1. This competition is an open category. Which means, you can dance "On1", "On2",
Cuban, Puerto Rican, Colombian Style, etc. Aerials, lifts, dips and tricks are welcome as all
styles will compete under one umbrella to determine who will be 2008 Texas Salsa Classic Champion.

2. The minimum age to participate in the Texas Salsa Classic is 18 years old.

3. To all the participants, once sign on or offline you give permission for the promoter to utilize your image taken from the competition, for promotions of the event, in VHS, DVD, JPG, etc.

5. The three couples that placed in this competition pass directly to the Semi-Finals of the Texas Salsa Classic the following year. This only applies if the couple is still dancing together.

The Process of This Competition:

6. The promoter, will carry out a drawing, type lottery, with the participating couples, to determine the order, before they begin the 1st Round of the championship. 

7. For the 2nd & 3rd Round, the order of the couples will be according to the scoring obtained in the 1st & 2nd Round. First couple performing at the 2nd or 3rd Round would be the ones that obtained the lowest scoring and the last one to perform is the one that the obtained the highest scoring.

8. The format of the 1st round competition, will depend on how many competitors will be participating. It will be determined by the promoter of the competition.

The two formats are: 

GROUPS (if we have more than 12 couples):

A) All the competitors will dance at the same time, or separated in small groups. The time period will be determined by promoter.

INDIVIDUAL (if we have 12 or less):

A) Each couple will have 2 minutes to show their skills to the music selection of the DJ playing at the event.

9. The wise decision of how to execute the competition will depend on the sufficient amount of couples participating, but the last word is always the promoter of the event.

10. The promoter will decide if the competition should be on stage or on the dance floor. It depends on the sufficient number of couples participating.

11. The location of the table of the judges, will be the decision of the promoter of the event.

The "Don't or Do Nots" During The Competiton:

12. The competitors and their coaches, will not be able to have direct communication with the judges during the competition. The communication with the judges should be through the promoter of the event.

13. The competitors will graciously accept the decisions of the panel of judges. You cannot appeal to the unwavering result made by the judges.  It is completely prohibited the expressions of displeasure toward the judges, organizers, public, sponsors and/or any person or company related to the Texas Salsa Classic, on the part of the dancers, coaches and/or relatives of the same.
